"Ministries" is the word used to denote service Christians provide for the benefit of people within and outside the church. All Christians are called to be ministers in one way or another. The following ministries are available to people at Mt. Zion United Methodist Church. If you desire to participate in any of the following ministries, see the pastor or other leader at Mt. Zion.

Audio (Sound) Team

  • Mt. Zion's Audio Team works diligently to ensure the best possible sound quality is maintained during church services. The Audio Team also provides services for those who need hearing augmentation.

Boston Butts

  • Twice per year, a group of dedicated men gather to apply their cooking skills to turn beef and pork shoulders into a Southern delicacy. The butts, and home-made sauce, are sold to raise funds for special causes.

Brunswick Stew

  • In September and October of each year, the people of Mt. Zion carefully prepare hundreds of quarts of Brunswick Stew--right in our own cast-iron kettles--for sale to the public.
  • Our stew is prepared following a handed-down recipe.
  • Some folks say our Brunswick Stew is the best around!

Certified Lay Speakers

  • This ministry is for those who have a desire, and the ability, to speak God's Word at church services, who take special preparatory classes, and receive certification by The United Methodist Church.
  • Mt. Zion (and other United Methodist Churches) routinely call on those certified as Lay Speakers to preside over and speak at worship services.

Children's Church

  • Each Sunday, Mt. Zion offers a special time, during the worship service, when our children gather for their own special time for learning about and worshipping God. Dedicated adult leaders oversee this ministry, which is open to children 4 years old through 5th grade.

Children's Consignment

  • Twice each year (fall and spring), we gather lightly-used children's clothing and toys, and other goods, to sell at the church in a Children's Consignment Sale
  • The sales benefit everyone involved: Families may buy items they need at low-cost, sellers make some money on things they no longer need, and the church receives a share of the proceeds.
Choir
  • The choir, which is one part of the music ministry (see below) at Mt. Zion, is a regular feature of Sunday Morning Worship. Choir members sing a variety of hymns to praise God and bless the congregation. The choir is open to those who, foremost, have a heart to joyfully sing to the Lord! We encourage all who are interested to contact our choir director, and come to choir practice!

Chrysalis

  • The youth version of Walk to Emmaus (see below) is called Chrysalis. To go on a Chrysalis Flight (in Chrysalis, its called a "Flight" instead of a Walk), young men and women must be between the ages of 15 and 18, and a sophomore, junior, or senior in high school. www.upperroom.org/chrysalis

Church Government

  • Mt. Zion offers a variety of opportunities for faithful church members whose knowledge, skills, and heart to serve, match the organizational and operational needs in the local church.

Community Day

  • One Sunday each May, Mt. Zion invites all our neighbors to come and share food, fun, and fellowship. We have live music, inflatable rides, games, prizes, and food--all free of charge! Next year (2011) we will hole our 3rd Annual Community Day.
Good Samaritan Ministries of Stokesdale
  • Good Samaritan Ministries consists of a group of churches in the Stokesdale area (including Mt. Zion) that collect and distribute food throughout the year for needy people in the community. Good Samaritan Ministries also sponsors special events, such as Community Health Day, that serve the needs of a large number of people.

Music

  • Music ministry involves all those in the church who worship God in singing and playing musical instruments.

Nursery

  • Our nursery is maintained by dedicated church members who offer loving care for infants and young children during Sunday School and Worship services.

Sunday School

  • Each Sunday morning, classes are offered for people of all ages, to educate God's people in the Bible and in Christian living.

United Methodist Men (UMM)

  • Men gather for friendship and to serve others in a variety of ways.
  • UMM meets on the third Sunday of odd months (Jan., Mar., May, July, Sept., Nov.) for an 8:30 am breakfast followed by a meeting.
United Methodist Women (UMW)
  • Women gather for friendship and to serve others in a variety of ways.
  • UMW meets on the third Tuesday of odd months (Jan., Mar., May, July, Sept., Nov.) at 7:00 pm. The meeting is followed by homemade snacks and refreshments.

United Methodist Youth Fellowship (UMYF)

  • Young people gather throughout the year to enjoy food, fellowship, learning, and service activities. See Calendar for upcoming youth events.

Ushers

  • Ushers assist the people and the pastor during worship services.
  • Ushers serve in a variety of ways, including: welcoming people as they arrive, handing out service bulletins, helping guest find their way around the church facility, and receiving tithes and offerings.

Vacation Bible School

  • Each summer, children are welcomed to attend a week of special, fun-filled instruction designed to increase their knowledge of the Bible and how to live as Christians.
